San Diego Off-The-Grid: 5 Activities You Won’t Find in Your Tourist Book

If you’re heading to visit our lovely city this summer, welcome. San Diego shines in the summer, and we’ve decided to be your travel guide… at least for the next five minutes!

But we don’t want to be just any old travel guide. We want you to discover parts of San Diego and unique experiences you won’t find in your tourist book. So grab a cup of Protein Coffee and plan out your trip — we promise you won’t be disappointed.

BECOME A GOLD DIGGER

2320 C Street, Julian

No, not the Kanye kind… we’re talking real gold-digging. In a gold mine. Just a hop, skip and a jump from the beach (well, about an hour and 15 minutes drive) you can visit the Eagle Mining Co. in rural Julian. Travel through 1000 feet of rock tunnels and a tour of the historic milling and extraction techniques, and have fun panning for gold. This one is a real treat for the kids.

SWING ON A (SECRET) SWING

Somewhere up a hill in La Jolla

Ok, not so secret now we let it out, but we think sharing is caring, so we have decided to tell you about the secret swing/s hidden in the trees above Scripps Pier by UCSD on the hillsides of La Jolla. The ocean views are spectacular once you make your way up the hill, and you may find yourself a moment of peace here from the summertime crowds as you contemplate whether it’s time to move to sunny San Diego.

Here’s how to get here: Head to the southern end of the Birch Aquarium parking lot and look for a narrow trailhead that begins with a small wooden plank walkway. Head straight up for around 100 feet and voila! If you can’t find it, ask a local — they’re sure to know what you are talking about.

CHECK OUT OUR SURFING HISTORY

312 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054

It’s no secret that surfing is a big deal here, and the small-but-loaded California Surf Museum in Oceanside is a treat. Drop in and experience whatever rotating exhibit is on show, and immerse yourself in skate and surf art, history, and culture. When you’re done, make sure to take a walk down Oceanside pier and have a chat with one of the friendly pelicans there.

GRAB A MOVIE — on a rooftop!

Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

1 Market Place, San Diego, CA 92101, 4th Floor Sport Terrace, Harbor Tower

You can count on San Diego to deliver perfectly perfect weather all summer long, which is why the Rooftop Cinema Club is a sure thing pretty much any day of your trip. Enjoy a family movie under the stars on a Sunday or make it the ultimate date night while you take in the panoramic views of downtown San Diego along with your movie. Find out more here.

GRAB A BEER… and some brewing memorabilia

Stone Brewing. 1999 Citracado Parkway Escondido, CA 92029

Believe us when we say, you won’t run out of options to grab a great craft beer in San Diego, but we love Stone Brewing because beyond crafting some of the tastiest IPAs in town, the brewery is something of a destination too. Whether you enjoy the pet-friendly acre beer garden, the shopping experience, or just the great beer and food, there’s something for everyone here.

And if you happen to run out of your stock of LonoLife while you’re hitting the road in secret style, just head on over to any of the local Sprouts Farmers Markets — they’ve got you covered!
